A friend told me about Flint River Ranch after a holistic veterinarian told him about this food and I've now used it for over 10 years.  Whole Dog Journal first recommended Flint River Ranch in 1998 and has continued to list FRR on their annual "Recommended List".

The company website lists the ingredients in each formula, so I'll take a different approach and tell you why I continue to feed Flint River Ranch products.

First and foremost, Flint River Ranch means Quality. Flint River Ranch products are made from human grade, not feed grade ingredients as most companies use.  There are no rendered by-products in Flint River Ranch foods.  By-products are basically any part of the animal that is not fit for human consumption; by-products are not handled as diligently as food specified for humans. Flint River Ranch is made in California, a state that has a 4-D Law. This means that animals cannot be Dead, Dying, Disabled or Diseased when they arrive at the slaughterhouse.  As unbelievable as it sounds, many dog foods are made with diseased animals.  Many companies continue to use chemical preservatives such as Ethoxyquin (a rubber hardener), BHA and BHT (thought to cause cancer).  (See links at bottom of page)

Over the years, several national brand pet foods have been recalled due to toxic mold in the grains used to make the foods.  The concern over toxins is the reason Flint River Ranch purchases its grains from major human food providers and not directly from small, independent farms.  These suppliers test and re-test the grains, providing excellent quality control.  Corn is difficult for all animals to digest and is not used in Flint River Ranch products. Low quality fillers such as corn cobs, peanut hulls, wood fiber, cottonseed, soy beans, beet pulp, straw or citrus pulp are not found in FRR products.

Would YOU eat what you feed your pet?

Flint River Ranch Puppy/Adult formula looks and tastes like a hard biscuit without the sugar.  It isn't greasy because no fats or oils are sprayed on after cooking to make it palatable.  How do I know this? Because I've actually eaten (not just tasted) several pieces of kibble!  If it's good enough for me, it's good enough for my dogs!  The Fish and Potato formula has a slight fish odor that is not overwhelming.  I do not like the smell of fish, yet this formula doesn't bother me.

Flint River Ranch is convenient  because it is delivered from the company to my door by UPS.  This method of delivery also insures freshness (as does the manufacture date listed on the bag). "The Critters" get very excited when the UPS truck pulls into our driveway to deliver their food!  FRR can be drop shipped to an address not your own, another great convenience.  I've used this method when on the road for dog shows (had the food shipped to a friend's house that was on my route) and when a dog was at someone else's home for several days or weeks for breeding or shows.  It's great to not have to haul large amounts of dog food when traveling.
